Tour Astana-Baikonur, Baikonur Space port

In 1955, the Soviet Union began building a test site for its first ICBMs near the small village of Tyuratam. For this, Tyuratam was conveniently located on the banks of the Syrdarya River and on the Moscow-Tashkent railway line (Zaralskaya railway). It was founded on February 2, 1955. [3] The key designers of the cosmodrome were Russian engineers Sergei Korolyev, Nikolai Pilyugin and Vladimir Barmin.

The name of the landfill was "Research and Testing Range No. 5", abbreviated as NIIP-5. It was named Baikonur to mislead the Western powers. The place of Tyuratam, on the one hand, was strictly classified, on the other hand, the Soviet government wanted to brag about its successes and after the space flight of Yuri Gagarin in 1961 also indicated the place of the rocket launch in public announcements. So then, the location of the Soviet cosmodrome was named Baikonur in the Karaganda region, which had nothing to do with the space program and is located about 320 km northeast of Tyuratam.
