Tour to Aral sea, round trip in Aral sea region, Small Aral Sea, Karateren village, Aralks city

The Aral Sea (Kazakh. Aral tenizi Aral teñizi; Uzbek Orol dengizi; Russian Aral Sea; in antiquity Oksiana) was a large closed salt lake in Central Asia. Due to prolonged drying, the lake broke up into several much smaller parts at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The remains have since formed the North Aral Sea, the Western Aral Sea, the Barsakelmes Island between them and the Aralkum Desert. All of them are located within the Aral-Caspian depression in the basin of the Turan lowland and belong to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and partially to both countries. The Aybugir Sea, located slightly to the south in Turkmenistan and originally connected with the Aral Sea, was cut off earlier. Due to the continental climate, semi-deserts and deserts prevail. The drying up of the lake, which has been increasing since about 1960, represents one of the largest man-made environmental disasters in the world.
