Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve is one of the largest nature reserves of the Republic of Kazakhstan by territory, established on April 16, 1968 in the Korgalzhyn district of Akmola region. The reserve was created to preserve and study natural processes, unique ecological systems, biological diversity and the genetic fund of flora and fauna in their natural state and development. 123 large and small lakes are located on the territory of the reserve, a large number of migratory and wintering birds live here. Korgalzhynsky Nature Reserve attracts fans of ornithology, ornithologists and just not indifferent people who like to watch birds in the wild.

Birds and wildlife of the Korgalzhynsky Reserve -

354 species of birds can be found on the territory of the reserve, including 126 species of nest-forming birds. 41 species of birds are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, 26 species are listed in the International Red Book. Thanks to these birds, the reserve has acquired international significance. The Korgalzhyn fauna is characteristic of steppe and semi-desert zones. There are 41 species of mammals, 6 species of reptiles, 2 species of bivalves, 11 species of fish. The invertebrate fauna of the reserve has not been studied at all. 300 species of beetles have been registered in the reserve. Korgalzhyn lakes are a paradise for fishermen. There are more than 60 species of rare animals and plants listed in the Red Books of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Republic of Kazakhstan on the territory of the reserve. In the reserve you can meet such rare species as flamingos, bald duck, steppe eagle, etc.

Information for tourists -

Now the sphere of ecological tourism is developing in the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve. Country roads are laid along the reserve. It is possible to move around the reserve only accompanied by a car from the reserve and a guide from the reserve, since the guide knows where to go and where it is better not to disturb the birds during, for example, their nesting.

History -

Due to the need to preserve some natural areas of the steppe from the mass development of virgin lands as soon as possible, in 1957, the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, with the support of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, proposed to create a nature reserve based on the Tengiz-Korgalzhyn lakes system. In January 1958, a branch of the Burabai State Forestry was organized on Lake Korgalzhyno. In May 1958, the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR created the Korgalzhyn Steppe Reserve with an area of 15 thousand hectares along Lake Korgalzhyno and the Kulanotpes River. In 1976-in October, the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve was included by the Ramsar Convention in the international list of wetlands of category "A". In July 2000, the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve entered the World Network of "living lakes". In July 2008, the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve was included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. In December 2008 , the territory of the reserve was expanded to 543,171 hectares . In February 2012, the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve was included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List as a biosphere reserve.
