Rock carvings in the Tamgaly-Tas tract on the Ili River are very popular. The Buddha images that were discovered here are believed to have been depicted here 500 years ago. Buddha images were depicted on large rocks that are located on the banks of the Ili River. Tamgaly-Tas translated from the Kazakh language means “stones with drawings.”

For the filming of the film Nomad in 2005, a small set town was built in a picturesque location on the banks of the Ili River in the Almaty region. The place is an architectural and natural landmark, and a place where people go to take photographs and travel to beautiful places. This place is also known as the "City of Nomads".
