Monument to Viktor Tsoi in Almaty

Famous musicians of the USSR -

Historical and cultural places in the city of Alma-Ata -

The monument to Viktor Tsoi in Almaty is one of the most iconic places for fans of the legendary musician and leader of the Kino group. The monument was erected in memory of the man whose songs became a symbol of freedom, sincerity and the spirit of change for several generations. Viktor Tsoi, who left a bright mark on the culture of the entire post-Soviet space, is especially close to the residents of Almaty, because it was here that his work received wide recognition, and his songs are still heard in courtyards, on the streets and in people's hearts. For Almaty, which in the 1980s was one of the rock epicenters of the USSR, this monument is also nostalgia for the era when music broke down walls. Local rock veterans remember how Tsoi performed in the Alma-Ata Community Center, and after the concerts he walked around the city at night. Today, those who were born after his death come here, but feel the same hunger for change. The monument is located on the pedestrian Tulebaev Street, if you go up a few blocks along the street, you can see the Zhetysu (Semirechye) fountain and next to it the monument to Mukan Tulebaev. Also nearby is the pedestrian Panfilov Street.

The sculptor managed to convey his characteristic image - simplicity, modesty and at the same time inner strength and charisma. The legs are wide apart, the thoughtful look and symbolic pose remind us of the romantic nature of the musician, for whom the stage and life were one. The monument was erected in the city of Alma-Ata in 2018, the author of the monument is Matvey Kukushkin, the opening of the monument is connected with the fact that the legendary film "The Needle" was filmed in the city, in which Viktor Tsoi played the leading role. The monument has become a real place of pilgrimage: people come here to lay flowers, light a candle, play the guitar or just be silent, listening to his songs in the shower. Memorial plaques with lines from Viktor's songs are installed next to the monument. The monument itself is surrounded by an atmosphere that reminds us of yard concerts and the informal culture of the late 80s. Tsoi's fans often gather here, arranging impromptu memorial evenings when his famous compositions are played. This place has become a kind of symbol of youth freedom and loyalty to the ideals of honesty and independence.

Alma-Ata honors Viktor Robertovich Tsoi as one of the idols of his time, whose work went far beyond music. The monument to Tsoi is not just a bronze figure, but a reminder of the power of music and its ability to unite people, despite the years and distances.
