Small Almaty Gorge is a picturesque mountain gorge, so called because of its small size if you compare it, for example, with the Big Almaty Gorge. The gorge is really deep and narrow, being in it you will be surrounded on all sides by the mountains of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, the beautiful mountain river Malaya Almatinka (Small Almaty River) flows through the gorge, the gorge was named after this river. The gorge is very popular among vacationers and is located closer to the central part of Almaty. The gorge has such attractions as the Medeo high-mountain sports complex (1500), where an ice rink operates in winter, the Shymbulak high-mountain base (Chimbulak) (2500), where a ski slope is open in winter. From the Medeo tract, a cable car runs up the gorge, along which you can climb to the Shymbulak base and then to the Big Talgar Pass (3163). The cable car operates both in winter and in summer.
From the Medeo sports complex up the gorge along the Malaya Almatinka River, there is a road along which electric taxis run, which take you to the Shymbulak base. This route can also be covered on foot, the route is very popular among outdoor enthusiasts, athletes and cyclists. At the Shymbulak base there are cafes, bars and restaurants where you can eat after a walk, there is also a hotel where you can stay overnight. In addition to the hotel on Shymbulak, cottages are rented out daily. Also, in the Small Almaty Gorge there are many different mountain routes for hiking, trekking, and mountain climbing to mountain peaks of varying difficulty levels.
