Blue Lake Kaskasu: the lost sapphire of the Dzungarian Alatau

Organization of mountain hikes in the Kolsay Lakes National Park -

Horseback riding in the Kolsay Lakes Park -

Lake Kaskasu is a high-mountain moraine lake, located at an altitude of 3168 meters above sea level in the Kolsay Lakes National Park. It is like a precious stone inscribed in a rocky frame - quiet, shining, mesmerizing. This is a place where the mountains speak their own language, where the wind carries ancient secrets, and the water preserves purity, untouched by time. There is a mountain hiking route to the lake, which requires special organization and preparation. The Kaskasu River of the same name originates from the lake. The water in the lake is a rich blue color - almost unreal - changes during the day from transparent sapphire to turquoise, depending on the angle of the sun and clouds. Such a sight is impossible to forget. This is not just a reservoir - it is a mystical bowl filled with glacial water, carrying thoughts upward, to the peaks. Above the lake there are also small lakes that create a cascade of lakes, you can also approach them along a mountain route. This lake is one of the most remote in the national park, it is located above such natural attractions as Lake Chon-Uryukty (Mazhi), Karasai gorge and Kurmenty gorge. Also, in the park there are such easily accessible locations as Kolsay lakes, along which there is also a mountain route through all three lakes and Lake Kaindy famous for its sunken forest.

How to get there and visit -

Lake Kaskasu is located in the upper reaches of the Kaskasu River valley in the Kolsai Lakes National Park, Kungei Alatau Mountains, Kegen district, Almaty region, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Information -

Lake Kaskasu has an elongated shape: about 290 meters long, up to 105 meters wide. Its shores are decorated with rocky ledges and mountain peaks. Everything around is filled with the freshness of mountain air and the whisper of a glacial river. Deep silence reigns here - only the wind, the sounds of water and the rare cries of birds of prey. The path to the lake is a test for the spirit and body. The ascent begins from the Shilik River up the Kaskasu River gorge. This hike can take from 3 to 5 days. The landscapes become more majestic with each turn: forests, cliffs, scree change, and now you are walking among stones and clouds. Behind the pass, the lake opens up - like a gift for the effort, like a reward for those who dared to come. The climate here is harsh and changeable. Even in summer, the nights are cold, and during the day you can catch the sun, fog and a sudden downpour within one hour. Therefore, the hike requires good equipment, endurance and respect for the mountains. The best time for the trip is July and August, when the snow melts and nature reveals itself in all its glory. Upstream of the Kaskasu River there are several more mountain lakes - a chain of living mirrors connected by running water. And somewhere there, 3 kilometers to the southeast, the Burgan-Suu pass rises, almost four thousand meters high, from where breathtaking panoramas of the Tien Shan and neighboring valleys open up.
Blue Lake Kaskasu is not for lazy tourists. This place is for those who seek a real connection with nature, who want to walk along ancient paths, breathe the purest air and hear the silence full of meaning. This is a territory of strength, beauty and the spirit of freedom.
