Karakhana Mausoleum (Aulie Ata) is an architectural monument of the XI century, a sacred sacred place, a place of pilgrimage preserved in Kazakhstan on the western outskirts of the modern city of Taraz. The mausoleum is located on the top of the hill, over the grave of Karakhan, the founder of the Karakhanid dynasty, who was the first of the Turks to accept and propagandize Islam. The original mausoleum was partially destroyed, the building was reconstructed in 1906, and an ancient tombstone was preserved inside the mausoleum.

Information -

The Karakhan Mausoleum was first studied in detail and described in his book "ornament in the architecture of Central Asia" by the famous Soviet historian, art critic, archaeologist Boris Petrovich Denike. In 1982, the mausoleum was included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Kazakhstan of national importance and taken under state protection. In Soviet times, an anti-religious museum was organized in the building of the mausoleum. In 2002, for the 2000th anniversary of Taraz, restoration was carried out in the mausoleum.

Architecture -

Karakhan's mausoleum is a portal-domed structure that forms a square when viewed from above. It consists of a central hall, three small rooms in the corners, the fourth corner is occupied by a staircase leading to the roof of the mausoleum. The facade of the mausoleum faces south, with minarets on the sides. The entrance is inside the arch, which has three cavities on both sides: quadrangular, square and pointed. At the entrance to the mausoleum, Shahadat is written in Arabic letters at the top. The mausoleum is lined with modern brick from the outside, and from the inside the vaults and arched openings on the window side are lined with brick from the Karakhanid period.
