Barys Arena Ice Palace: Home of the Snow Leopards and the country's main hockey rink

Kazakhstan's main world-class hockey stadium -

Home arena of HC Barys with modern equipment -

The Barys Arena Ice Palace is assigned the role of the most modern and high-tech hockey venue in Central Asia. This grand complex located in the Yesil district of Astana on the site of the former Maly Taldykol Lake was officially opened on August 8 2015.

Built after the KHL commission identified discrepancies at the old stadium the palace became the new home arena for the flagship of Kazakh hockey – the Barys club. Located next to the Alau Ice Palace and Astana Arena Stadium Barys Arena is a mandatory stop for all fans of dynamic sports in the capital.

The place impresses with its scale and futuristic high-tech style. The glass facade of the building changes its shade depending on the weather and the flat circular roof rests on unique bifurcating supports. The interior space is designed so that almost 12,000 spectators can enjoy the game with maximum comfort near Abu Dhabi Plaza Mall.

Here the atmosphere of big hockey meets advanced engineering solutions creating ideal conditions for Continental Hockey League matches near the Botanical Garden and the Mangilik El Triumphal Arch.

The ice palace is a key multifunctional object of the capital featuring not only the main transformer arena but also the Barys Arena Pool Olympic swimming pool.

Thanks to the proximity to Linear Park and Ulytau Alley visiting a match is easy to combine with a walk along the main landmarks of the left bank. A visit to Barys Arena allows you to feel the power of the sporting spirit of Kazakhstan and see one of the best KHL arenas which hosted the prestigious All-Star Game in 2018.

History

The history of Barys Arena began in 2012 when it became obvious that the previous Kazakhstan sports palace did not meet the strict technical regulations of the KHL. The project was implemented by the IT Engineering S.A. architectural bureau. In the debut match in August 2015 Barys won against Metallurg Novokuznetsk and later the Gagarin Cup winner – SKA Saint Petersburg – was defeated on this ice.

Over the years of operation the arena has become a symbol of the revival of the capital's hockey. In addition to KHL matches world championships in the first division and major cultural events are held here. The history of the palace is a journey from a drained lake to one of the most visited and comfortable ice bowls in Eurasia where even a local positioning system has been implemented to analyze the efficiency of each player.

Information

Barys Arena is a five-story giant with a capacity of 11,578 spectators. The main bowl has three tiers: the lower one is located as close to the glass as possible for full immersion in the game while the middle one is reserved for VIP boxes for 800 seats and a panoramic restaurant. A massive video cube for broadcasts hangs over the center of the rink and the corridors are equipped with plasma panels so that fans don't miss moments while in cafes or merchandise stores.

The uniqueness of the object lies in its versatility: the transformer arena turns into a boxing ring basketball court or concert stage in a short time. The sports block includes training ice as well as Olympic and jumping pools allowing for competitions in water polo diving and synchronized swimming. The infrastructure is fully adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility.

Detailed description of the object

A walk through Barys Arena opens a view of the city from the panoramic terraces of the upper floors. Inside the stadium everything is dedicated to the convenience of fans: wide foyers modern food courts and entertainment zones. A feature of the stands is their steep incline which creates a cauldron effect and allows for an excellent view of the puck even from the highest rows.

On home game days the stadium becomes the center of life in the capital. The proximity to Astana Arena and the Botanical Garden allows fans to arrive in the area early and walk in the park zones before the face-off. In the evening the building is effectively illuminated emphasizing the glass facets of the facade and making Barys Arena one of the most recognizable landmarks of Turan Avenue.

Architecture

The architectural solution of Barys Arena in high-tech style distinguishes it among other buildings in the city. The use of metal and reflective glass gives the 150,000-complex visual lightness. The interiors are decorated in the club's signature colors – blue and white. The building is designed as part of a single sports town harmoniously neighboring the futuristic forms of Alau and the scale of the football stadium.

Legend and conclusion

There is a belief that the energy of this place where Barys achieved its most iconic playoff victories brings luck to aspiring hockey players.
Barys Arena is not just an ice palace but the pride of Astana and a true temple of hockey.
A visit to this place is a must for every tourist to see the scale of modern sports in Kazakhstan and enjoy the atmosphere of the game at a world-class arena.
