Gulder Park

Parks in the northern (lower) part of Almaty -

Attractions in the Zhetusu District of Almaty -

Gulder Park (meaning "Flowers" in Kazakh) is one of Almaty most cozy and beloved green spaces, located in the Zhetusu District. It's a place where nature and tranquility blend with the urban rhythm, creating the perfect setting for relaxation and strolls. The park is known for its well-tended flower beds, shady alleys, and warm, family-friendly atmosphere. The Big Almaty Water Canal (BAC) runs next to the park, so in the summer, you can admire the rapidly flowing water from the park. The park also features a canal embankment and a bridge over the canal, perfect for taking photos.

The name "Gulder" perfectly captures the character of this place. In spring and summer, the park transforms into a vibrant blooming garden – the flowerbeds shimmer with every color, and the scent of flowers fills the air. This has made the park one of the most picturesque spots for strolls and photoshoots in western Almaty. The park offers a beautiful panorama of the mountainous part of the city and the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau.

A special feature of the park is that in winter, free ice rinks are open, where you can go skating and teach your children to skate. This place has long been a favorite spot for both locals and visitors to the southern capital who live in the northern part of the metropolis, offering ideal conditions for rest and relaxation.

History

Gulder Park was founded in the 1980s, when the residential area of the Zhetysu district was actively developing. At that time, Almaty was focusing on creating new recreational areas, and the park became a true highlight of the new neighborhood. Its name was chosen by the residents themselves, inspired by the colorful flowerbeds planted along the alleys.

Since its founding, the park has been repeatedly improved: new trees have been planted, paths have been widened, benches and lighting have been installed. After renovations in the 2010s, playgrounds, sports areas, a skate park, and a fountain were added, making Gulder a popular recreation spot for all ages.

Nature and Atmosphere

The park's greatest asset is its greenery. Spruce, maple, birch, and poplar trees grow here, along with numerous ornamental shrubs and perennial flowers. In spring, the entire space is covered in fresh greenery and lush blooms; in summer, the shade of the trees is pleasant to relax in; and in autumn, the park turns golden and especially cozy. Numerous squirrels live in the park, and visitors always feed them nuts.

The Park is renowned for its tranquility – despite the bustle of the city around it, a sense of peace reigns within. Birdsong, rustling leaves, and the scent of fresh grass make Gulder the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy nature. The Park is home to the Zhetysu District Akimat, a football field, and a public service center.

Architecture and Landscaping

The grounds of Gulder Park are designed with visitors in mind. There are neat pedestrian paths, wooden benches, gazebos, and picnic areas. A central illuminated fountain, especially beautiful in the evening, occupies a central spot.

Several play areas with safe surfaces and attractions have been created for children, while sports enthusiasts can enjoy outdoor exercise equipment, volleyball, and basketball courts. The southern side of the park often hosts cultural events, including concerts, exhibitions, and celebrations for district residents.

Legend

There's a beautiful legend about the origin of the park's name. They say that when builders were laying out the first flower garden, a tear from a young woman who lived nearby fell into the ground. She had lost her beloved and came here every day to plant flowers in his memory. In the spring, the most vibrant and fragrant flowers, the likes of which no one had ever seen before, blossomed here. People took this as a sign of love and life, and named the park "Gulder" – in honor of eternal bloom and the beauty born from the heart.
