Trip from Almaty to Kashgar -
The monument to Chokan Valikhanov is one of the most recognizable monuments of the city of Almaty, embodying the deep respect of the people for the great Kazakh scientist, ethnographer, historian and educator. It is installed in the center of the Chokan Valikhanov park, not far from the historical center of the city on the square opposite the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. This place has become not only an architectural landmark, but also a symbol of Kazakhstan's spiritual heritage, a place where history meets science and culture.
The monument is dedicated to the man who was the first to show the world the rich culture and history of the nomadic people, described the life and traditions of Central Asia, leaving invaluable scientific works to his descendants. For many residents and visitors of the city, the monument is not just a bronze figure, but the personification of national pride, intelligence and a bright desire for knowledge.
History
The monument was erected in 1969 during the period of active perpetuation of the memory of Kazakhstani scientists and cultural figures. The authors of the composition were talented sculptors and architects of that time, who sought to convey Valikhanov's inner strength, intelligence and spiritual depth. The monument was erected on the initiative of the public of Almaty and the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, because it was Chokan Valikhanov who is considered one of the first Kazakhs who contributed to the development of ethnography, geography and history of Central Asia.
The opening of the monument was an important event for the city. The ceremony was attended by intellectuals, writers, scientists and descendants of the great researcher. Since then, this monument has become an integral part of the cultural image of Almaty.
Architecture and description of the monument
The monument is made in a realistic manner and represents a bronze figure of Chokan Valikhanov standing at full height. The scientist is depicted in a moment of reflection – his gaze is thoughtful, as if he is once again preparing for a journey and new discoveries. The sculptor managed to convey not only the external similarity, but also the inner character of Valikhanov: calmness, confidence, and the desire for knowledge. His left hand is under his chin, and in his right hand he holds a notebook.
The figure is mounted on a massive granite pedestal, symbolizing the firm support of knowledge and spirit. An inscription with the name of Chokan Valikhanov is carved in the lower part, and trees are planted nearby, creating an atmosphere of privacy and reverence. In the evening, the monument is softly illuminated, and the figure of the scientist seems almost alive – as if the researcher himself emerges from the darkness, returning from the past.
Chokan Valikhanov – personality and legacy
Chokan Valikhanov (1835-1865) was one of the most prominent sons of the Kazakh people. He was born into a family of descendants of the Khans and received a brilliant education in the Omsk Cadet Corps. Already in his youth, he proved himself as a researcher, historian and ethnographer. Valikhanov participated in expeditions to Semirechye, Dzungaria and Kashgaria, where he collected unique materials about the culture and way of life of the peoples of Central Asia.
He not only recorded ethnographic data, but also studied folklore, myths, religious beliefs, engaged in translations and comparative analysis of cultures. His works had a huge impact on the development of science and helped the West, for the first time, to better understand the inner world of Central Asia.
Despite his short life, Valikhanov left behind an invaluable legacy – the works "Journey to Kashgaria", "Essays on Dzungaria", "Notes on the Kyrgyz" and others, which are still considered fundamental.
