Kapchagay hydroelectric power station is located on the Ili River, the construction of the hydroelectric power station was started in 1963 and completed in 1980. The dam consists of two barrage structures, two dams, one 470 m long and one 370 m long. The highest height is 56 m . The reservoir connected with the hydroelectric power station-Kapchagay Lake with a length of 110 km × 30 km, the reservoir serves the water supply of the city of Almaty and is one of the two largest reservoirs in Kazakhstan after the Bukhtarma reservoir. Electricity is generated at a hydroelectric power station.

Kapchagay HPP – history –
On September 29, 1969, the Ili River was closed for the first time, and in May 1970, filling of the reservoir began. The first turbine began operation on December 22, 1970, the fourth - on December 22, 1971. The last construction works were completed in 1980.
