Republican Academic German Drama Theatre

An island of German scene and European culture in Almaty -

Theaters and cultural attractions of Almaty -

The Republican Academic German Drama Theater in Almaty is a place where, under the sky of the Trans-Ili Alatau, German sounds next to Russian and Kazakh, and classics and modern drama meet with a lively, almost chamber atmosphere.

This is the only professional German theater in the CIS, created in order to preserve the language and cultural heritage of the German community of Kazakhstan and at the same time be an open platform for creative experiments and international dialogue.

History

The Republican Academic German Drama Theater is a unique phenomenon in the cultural life of Almaty, which arose as a bridge between the German community of Kazakhstan and the general public. Its roots go back to the seventies of the last century, when, on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR, the first professional team of German actors was created. At first, the theater operated in Temirtau, where the official opening took place and the first performances were staged that touched on the theme of German heritage in Kazakhstan.

Later, the theater moved to Alma Ata, where it found a response from the urban audience. The nineties were a challenge: many actors left for Germany, and the troupe was almost empty. Then a new chapter began a German theater studio was opened at the Zhurgenov Academy of Arts, and teachers from Germany helped to form a new generation of artists. These actors later became the foundation of modern German theater.

For many years, the theater operated without its own building, changing stages and touring the country and abroad. It was only in 2018 that he found a new home – a modern stage on Papanina Street, where his creative life continues today.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of the German Theater is characterized by a special closeness and inner concentration. There is no excessive pomp here – the scene seems to encourage the viewer to listen carefully to the word, observe the actor's plasticity and live the drama without barriers.

Students of theater universities, young directors, fans of German culture and those who for the first time take a step into the world of the European theatrical tradition meet in the lobby. Everything here is imbued with respect for the stage, for language, for history, for human experience.

Each performance is played not only by the troupe, but also by the space itself, by the depth of light, the silence before the actor's exit, and the special warmth of the hall. This is a place where modern theatrical thought is felt especially closely.

Repertoire

The repertoire of the theater creates a rare combination of German, European and Russian drama for Kazakhstan. Schiller and Brecht, Goethe and Mrozek, Chekhov and Gogol, Shakespeare and modern German authors are heard here. Along with the world classics, Kazakhstani plays are staged, which receive a new, different shade in the interpretation of the theater.

The audience can see performances in German, Russian and Kazakh, which makes the theater a cultural laboratory where texts live in a multilingual space.

The theater actively cooperates with directors from Europe and Kazakhstan, opens a platform for plastic performances, musical projects and directorial experiments. A special event was the production of "Karagoz", where the Kazakh classics received a modern, European plastic sound.

Modern role

Today, the German Drama Theater is an important cultural center of Almaty and one of the symbols of Kazakhstan's multinational heritage. He preserves the German language, introduces the audience to the European theater school and at the same time supports local authors and directors.

The theater has become a place where cultures intersect: those who are interested in art, language, and the history of the diaspora come here, and those who are simply looking for an unusual theatrical experience.

Thanks to international projects, cooperation with cultural institutions in Germany and active touring activities, the theater continues to strengthen ties between Kazakhstan and the European theater space.

The importance of the theater for the city of Almaty

When you approach the theater building, it seems that the city is deliberately slowing down the pace. Everything is quieter, softer, more thoughtful here. And even before you go inside, you feel that there is not just a performance ahead of you, but a special encounter – with history, with language, with human experience, which theater knows how to reveal in a way that no other art can.

This theater has become a place where the German community of Kazakhstan has found a voice, where forgotten traditions have been preserved, where young directors are looking for new forms, and the audience is looking for new meanings. His path is a path of overcoming, searching, change and amazing resilience, thanks to which the theater has been living and developing for several decades.

Legend

A quiet urban legend is associated with the theater. They say that when the last performance ends, the hall empties and the lights go out, leaving the stage filled with the whispers of past lives. If you sit down in an empty hall in the far row and think about your path for a while, the answer, they say, comes by itself – as if the theater helps you hear your own voice.

There is another belief: if a person who has come to Almaty for the first time watches a play here and speaks at least one word in German, the city will leave a mark on his soul and will definitely invite him to return.
