The Holy Dormition Cathedral in Astana: a majestic stronghold of Orthodoxy

Main Orthodox church of the capital and the largest religious structure -

Holy Assumption Cathedral is a unique architectural and spiritual site in the city of Astana. The building, the first stone of whose foundation was laid in 2006, strikes with its beauty and grandeur: snow-white walls combined with five golden domes shine at the intersection of busy streets not so far from the Monument to the Defenders of the Fatherland.

The construction of the cathedral was carried out with the personal support and direct participation of the First President, which became a symbol of interfaith harmony in the republic, emphasized by the proximity to the Beit Rachel Chabad Lubavitch Synagogue.

The church represents an entire complex, including a spiritual and cultural center that organically complements the landscape of the right bank near the spacious Zheruyyk Park. The capital Astana, through the functioning of such a majestic cathedral, demonstrates to the whole world an example of openness, where Orthodox domes neighbor the Church of St. Joseph the Betrothed. The white and blue tones of the building personify purity, harmonizing with the greenery and the modern appearance of this area of the city.

The capital Astana carefully preserves this site as a "pearl of faith," where a monument to Saint Sergius of Radonezh is installed in front of the entrance to the cultural center. The cathedral has become a true calling card of Orthodoxy, linking together historical monuments and modern recreational zones of the right bank.
The building occupies a central place in the cultural life of the capital, being a 20-minute walk from the sports Triathlon Park and the cozy Bauyrzhan Momyshuly Park.

History

The history of the creation of the Assumption Cathedral began in 2004 with the appointment of Metropolitan Methodius to the Astana cathedra. Until that time, believers in Astana (about 120 thousand people) were crowded in the old Constantine and Helen Cathedral and the small Alexander Nevsky Church. In January 2006, the consecration of the foundation slab took place, and on Easter of the same year, the first liturgy was performed in the basement floor. By 2009, the walls were clad in white marble, and Metropolitan Methodius, in the presence of Akim I. Tasmagambetov and RF Ambassador M. Bocharnikov, consecrated the domes and crosses.

On January 17, 2010, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia performed the rite of the great consecration of the cathedral. Later, in 2011, the Synod made a decision to build the Cyril and Methodius Spiritual and Cultural Center, which First President N. Nazarbayev visited in 2012. In 2015, the temple was visited by RF President Vladimir Putin, who presented an icon of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. Over the years of its existence, the cathedral has become the main spiritual center of the Metropolitan District in Kazakhstan, an architectural monument of the 21st century, and a place of pilgrimage for world leaders.

Information

Holy Assumption Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Central Asia. Its total area exceeds 2000 m², and its capacity reaches 4000 people. The cathedral has three aisles: the main one – the Assumption of the Mother of God, the right one – Saints Cyril and Methodius, and the left one – Archangel Michael. The lower church is consecrated in honor of the Assembly of New Martyrs and Confessors of Kazakhstan. The spiritual and cultural center with an area of 12,245 m² includes a Sunday school for children from 3 to 14 years old, a church-historical museum, concert halls for 100 and 500 seats, as well as hotels for pilgrims and clergy.

The cathedral houses the greatest shrines: a particle of the relics of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called (a gift from Pope Benedict XVI), a reliquary with the relics of the venerable fathers of the Kiev Caves, the miraculous Astana-Pochaev icon, and a "measure for measure" copy of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God. A unique feature is the 75-meter bell tower with 8 bells with a total weight of more than 11 tons (the largest – "Uspensky" weighing 5.2 tons). Since 2016, an "electronic bell-ringer" has been operating on the bell tower, allowing the ringing to be controlled from a computer and reproducing dozens of complex compositions.

Detailed description of the object

The temple complex is a harmonious combination of art and faith:

• Iconostasis – a five-tier masterpiece 18 meters high in the "Moscow Baroque" style. Made by masters from Kostroma, decorated with 170 icons painted on linden boards according to the samples of the Kremlin Armory.

• Frescoes – more than 6000 m² of walls are painted by an artel of 40 Palekh artists. The subjects illustrate Gospel parables and the earthly life of the Virgin Mary on sky-blue backgrounds.

• Spiritual and Cultural Center – a three-block complex with a library, youth movement, sports sections, and a museum open on Sundays.

• Bell tower – a five-tier tower 75 meters high, whose bells were cast at N. Shuvalov's plant in Yaroslavl from the donations of believers. • Monument to Sergius of Radonezh – installed in front of the entrance to the spiritual and cultural center as a symbol of spiritual mentorship and miracle-working.

Architecture

The author of the project is architect Konstantin Moryak. The cathedral is built in the classic Russian-Byzantine style of the 16th-17th centuries. Snow-white marble facades are crowned by five onion domes covered with titanium nitride for gold. Modern technologies allowed the designers to abandon massive internal columns, creating a single bright space with vault heights up to 44 meters. Special attention is paid to details: the icon shop and confessionals are decorated with national Kazakh ornament, which emphasizes the uniqueness of the temple on Kazakh land.

Legend

A legend about "Solar Blessing" lives among parishioners: during the consecration of the domes in 2009, a "window" opened in the cloudy sky over the cathedral, and a ray of sun illuminated the main cross.
Another legend of the city of Astana is associated with the bells: they say that the ringing of the "Uspensky" bell has the power to heal emotional wounds and brings peace to the families of those who participated in its creation.
They also believe that prayer in the lower church before the icons of the new martyrs grants special fortitude in life's trials.

Conclusion

Holy Assumption Cathedral is a place where architectural grandeur and quiet prayer connect. A visit to this complex allows one to see Astana as a city of unity and high spiritual culture. Due to its location in the vicinity of significant monuments and parks, the cathedral is a mandatory point in any tourist itinerary.
The capital Astana invites everyone to feel the grace of this place and enjoy the beauty of the Palekh paintings under the golden vaults.
