Information
Since the population of Astana increased significantly in the 1990s, and there were only two Russian Orthodox churches in the city, it became necessary to build additional churches. A project for the construction of a new church was proposed, and the city administration made available two plots of land on Shumabayev Street where a new cathedral was to be built. Actual construction work began in the spring of 2005. On January 14, 2006, the Metropolitan of Astana consecrated the cornerstone of the foundation of the cathedral under construction.
By April, the construction work of the Assumption Cathedral had progressed so much that the first service could be served in the building on Easter Day. In January 2007, with the support of the city administration, a public fund was created, which was used to finance ongoing construction work and the completion of the cathedral. In addition, in the same year the building received its bells. In 2008, a storage facility was built. By Easter 2009, the exterior walls were lined with white marble, windows and doors were installed, and two exits to the territory decorated with domes were built. In August 2009, five domes of the cathedral's roof were consecrated. On January 18 , 2010 , the cathedral was inaugurated and consecrated by Patriarch Kirill I of Moscow and All Russia . Only after the opening of the building, the cathedral received an iconostasis. From October 2013 to April 2014, the ceiling and walls were painted. The construction of the bell tower began in 2013. It was consecrated on November 26, 2016.
