Sultan-Epe is an outstanding underground Sufi mosque, a sacred gem of the Mangistau Region, an ancient pilgrimage destination, and a recognized place of spiritual power. The land of Mangystau has been revered since ancient times as the land of 362 saints (awliya), and Saint Sultan-Epe holds a special place among them as a righteous Sufi, the son of the prominent Sufi poet Hakim-Ata (Suleiman Bakirgani), and a follower of the spiritual tradition of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. In folk memory, he remains the heavenly patron of seafarers, savior of the drowning, healer, and protector of all travelers.
The sacred complex is carved into bedrock limestone on the edge of a deep gorge near the coast of the Caspian Sea. The mosque includes 9 underground chambers. Each room had its own purpose: the central halls served for solitary dhikr, collective prayers, and spiritual vigils, while the side cells were used by Sufis for religious instruction, discussions with disciples, and contemplation. Light penetrates into the rock mass through neatly cut ceiling lightwells, creating a strict prayerful atmosphere of silence and tranquility in the halls.
Directly by the complex, just a few meters from the edge of the gorge, lies the sacred well of Sultan-Epe with crystal-clear fresh water. Pilgrims from all over Kazakhstan and neighboring countries come here to perform ritual ablution, drink the healing water, and draw it to take along for the healing of soul and body. Nearby runs the picturesque Sultan-Epe Canyon, descending toward the marine Sarytash Bay, where wild shrubs blossom especially in spring and early summer, bringing a blessed green oasis to life.
Rules of Pilgrimage and Visiting Sacred Sites (Ziyarat):
• Before entering the necropolises and the underground mosque, pilgrims attune themselves to a pious intention (niyyah) and maintain reverent silence;
• Clothing must be modest and covering: short shorts and open tank tops are prohibited for men (trousers and shirts are recommended); women must cover their heads with a scarf and wear long dresses or skirts that fully cover the shoulders and knees;
• Consuming alcoholic beverages, smoking, and defacing ancient tombstones are strictly forbidden on the grounds of sacred complexes;
• By tradition, surahs of the Holy Quran are recited near the mazars of saints, dedicating the spiritual reward to the spirits of ancestors (aruakhs), sadaqah (voluntary alms) is offered, and a blessing (bata) is sought.
