Trip from Atyrau to the Sultan-Epe mosque

Sacred places of Atyrau region

Sultan-Epe is an underground mosque-sufi landmark of the Mangistau region, a sacral, sacred place, a place of pilgrimage and a place of power. The mosque is carved into a limestone rock deep underground, next to the shore of the Caspian Sea, and consists of 9 rooms. Part of the rooms was used for reading prayers, other rooms were used for religious studies. Light enters the mosque through special cut holes in the thickness of the rock. At a distance of 5 km from the mosque there is a water well, which is also called the “Sultan-epe well”, here you can drink water and take water in bottles, there is also a canyon nearby, which has a similar name, “Sultan-epe canyon”. The water in the well is sacred, the nature of the region is especially beautiful in spring and early summer.
