On March 16, 2022, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in a message to the people of Kazakhstan at a joint meeting of the chambers of parliament, noted that Ulytau region would be formed from part of the Karaganda region. On the territory of the former Zhezkazgan region, it is necessary to create the Ulytau region. The city of Zhezkazgan will again become a regional center. The creation of an autonomous region in this region is an important decision not only economically, but also spiritually. The region was formed on June 8, 2022 in accordance with the Decree of the President of Kazakhstan. It should be noted that its territory is smaller than the territory of the former Zhezkazgan region (until 1997 it included Shet, Aktogay districts, the cities of Balkhash and Priozersk). The region consists of 2 districts and 3 cities of regional significance, the city of Zhezkazgan, the city of Karazhal, and the city of Satpayev.
