The monument to Shokan Valikhanov in the village of Shanghai (Shokan) was erected in 1979, the sculptor of the monument Julian Rukavishnikov. The monument is located on a natural hill, 100 meters from the famous museum of the Altyn Emel Nature Reserve, Kerbulak district, Zhetysu region, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Shokan Valikhanov was a Kazakh-Russian scientist, historian, ethnographer, geographer and literary critic, a descendant of Ablay Khan. Russian Russians in Central Asia ("Russians in Central Asia") is considered to be his main work, which has also been translated into English. He also studied shamanism among the Kazakhs and the Kyrgyz epic Manas. His collected works were published by the Historical, Archaeological and Ethnographic Institute (Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography named after Ch. Valikhanov) Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR) in Alma-Ata, bearing his name.
