The mosque-madrasah of Kokbai Zhanatauly is a religious and educational institution and a museum at the same time. The mosque's museums contain materials dedicated to the life of Kokbai Zhanatayech, who was a student, friend and colleague of Abai Kunanbayev, the great poet and thinker of Kazakhstan. The Kokbai Museum in the mosque was opened on September 12, 1997, as part of the state historical, cultural, literary and memorial reserve-Museum of Abai. The mosque itself was built and opened in 1901-1904. The poet himself was buried next to the mosque in 1925. The exposition of the mosque museum contains archival materials related to the life of Kokbai Zhanatayev, various documents, photographs, objects reflecting the everyday and ethnographic life of the poet, books. The works of Abai scholars led by Mukhtar Auezov are also presented.

The mosque of Kokbai Zhanatauly madrasah is located 9 kilometers from the village of Kokbai (Kyzyltas), 18 kilometers from the village of Karaul, Abai district, East Kazakhstan region, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Information

Zhanataev Kokbai (1861-1925) was a poet, educator, disciple and disciple of Abai Kunanbayev. As a child, Kokbai studied at Kamali Madrasah in Semey, at the district school, after three years of studying with Toletai Molda. After completing his apprenticeship, he is constantly next to Abai, helps him and participates in the poet's life. In 1901, he opened a madrasah at his own expense, where he taught children of Kazakh villages in the region, taught lessons in Kazakh and Russian. As a textbook, he writes to his students the “principles of the Arabic language” in verse. Kokbai built a mosque with a high tower in 1908. In 1913, he went to Mecca and became a pilgrim. With the release of the new education system, he continued to teach children in his madrasah. In 1921, he fell ill and was treated, visiting cities such as Moscow, Tomsk, St. Petersburg, Omsk. In 1924, in honor of the 20th anniversary of Abai's death, he attended an evening in Semipalatinsk and told the story of the poet's memory.
