The Abylkhan Kasteyev State Art Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened in 1976 on the basis of the T. Shevchenko Kazakh State Art Gallery (founded in 1935) and the Republican Museum of Applied Arts (founded in 1970). In January 1984, the museum was named after the People's Artist of the Kazakh SSR Abylkhan Kasteyev. By UNESCO's decision, the 100th anniversary of Abylkhan Kasteyev was widely celebrated in 2004. On January 15, 2004, the grand opening of the anniversary exhibition of A. Kasteyev took place. The exhibition includes all the works of the artist. In particular, more than 400 watercolors and paintings, photographic documents, personal belongings of the artist, and newsreels were exhibited in four large halls of the museum. In addition, the artist's exhibitions were held in the city of Paris and in the regional centers of the republic, for example in the city of Zharkent. The Kasteyev Art Museum was opened in the village of Chunja and there was a Kasteyev Park.

Today, the A. Kasteyev Museum of Fine Arts is the leading scientific research and cultural and educational art museum of the city of Almaty and the Republic of Kazakhstan. The museum has 9 scientific centers, such as fine arts of Kazakhstan, applied arts of Kazakhstan, foreign classical art, foreign art of the new era, restoration funds, exhibitions and expositions, propaganda and tour desk, information and publishing. The museum's modern collection is no different in its high artistic level from many world collections. The works in the museum's collection include more than 22,500 works of painting, graphics, architecture and priceless works of applied art of the peoples of Kazakhstan, Russia, Europe, America, and the countries of the East in the museum's richest fund. The permanent exhibition of the museum is built in the order of historical chronology, where the main stages of the development of world art can be observed through exhibits showing the cultural wealth and uniqueness of each nation. Not only scientific research and educational activities are actively conducted in the museum, annual international and national scientific conferences have become a trend. Exhibitions of Kazakhstani and foreign artists held at the museum are of particular interest to art lovers and guests of Almaty.

The Museum of A. Kasteyev is not limited only to collecting, preserving and organizing exhibitions, but at the same time sets itself the goal of conducting educational work in order to promote the museum collection and widely attract the public to artistic culture. The main types of work are: actively attracting visitors of different ages and social groups, conducting thematic and sightseeing tours in order to demonstrate the high artistic level of the museum fund; conducting lectures using rich illustrative material. There is a Children's Art Academy next to the museum. Lectures on the history of fine and decorative arts are designed for 4-5 months. The museum is a member of the prestigious international Association of Museums ICOM at UNESCO.
