History -
The grove got its name in honor of Eduard Baum, a famous forester of the late 19th century. It was he who laid the first landings here in 1894. He brought and planted seedlings from different parts of Russia and Europe, experimenting with which trees would take root in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau. Baum was convinced that the harsh and arid climate of Semirechye could be mitigated if trees and shrubs were properly cultivated. Baum dreamed of turning the dry steppe into a flourishing land, and the experiment was a success: poplars, oaks, maples, linden trees, ash trees and chestnuts grew in place of the wasteland, and even fruit trees appeared. Over time, the grove became a favorite vacation spot for residents of the city of Vernoye, and then Almaty.
