Information -

The Potanin Historical Museum occupies 2 connected tsarist-era buildings in the old trading city. It was once home to the city telegraph office and the mansion of a wealthy merchant named Artem Derov, who founded the first coal mining enterprise in nearby Ekibastuz. The museum itself is named after Grigory Potanin, a famous Russian ethnographer and historian of the 19th century. He was a close friend of Chokhan Valikhanov, the most famous ethnographer and explorer of Kazakhstan. The museum is located in the former mansion of the merchant Artem Derov, now the Potanin Museum of History and Local Lore. Early history shows large skeletons of a complete mammoth and a giant deer, accompanied by exhibitions about the Kimak state (9th-11th centuries), which centered on the Irtysh River, and the Golden Horde era (12th-14th centuries), with finds such as the Kalbasun Tower.

This is followed by rooms on the Kazakh khanates, accompanied by wonderful displays of traditional Kazakh jewelry, traditional Kazakh arts and instruments, which also cover famous "batyrs" (warriors) from Pavlodar such as Zhasabai (1716-1741) and his uncle Olzhabai. Originally from the Argyn tribe of the Kazakh Middle Zhuz, both played prominent roles in the Kazakh battles with the Dzungars in the east. Zhasabai's tomb is located in Bayanaul National Park.

The Soviet period included industrial development: salt mining, coal mining and a campaign to develop virgin lands. There is also a section on political repression.
