The Kostanay Kazakh Drama Theater named after Ilyas Omarov is a cultural and stage institution, at the same time it is an architectural monument of the city, because it is incredibly beautiful both outside and inside. The theater was built and opened in 2000 in the city of Kostanay as part of the “Support for City Culture” on the initiative of local authorities. The theater group was founded by graduates of the Almaty Art Academy and a cultural figure of Kazakhstan. The theater opened its first stage with the play “Abylay Khan” directed by Zhambylbek Yesenbekov. Then the first president Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed to name the theater after Ilyas Omarov, an outstanding person who made a significant contribution to the culture of Kazakhstan.

House of Kazakh Art Kostanay Regional, Kazakh Drama Theater named after I. Omarov began its work in 2000. The first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, attended the official opening of the institution and wished him good luck in the future. A year after the creation of the theater, he began to actively participate in republican and international festivals. He won several titles and became a prize-winner. He began performing not only in Kazakhstan, but also in many foreign countries. For example, in 2003 he was invited to go on tour to the Nogaibakh district of the Chelyabinsk region of the Russian Federation. This year, R. Ibraeva’s play “Love and Retribution” (directed by A. Valiev) was staged in Troitsk. On January 12, 2012, the theater moved to a new modern building. In 2012, when the art center began work in a new building, a festival of republican theaters was organized in Kostanay, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the outstanding public and statesman, writer Ilyas Omarov. Today the theater's repertoire includes more than 100 works of world classics and masterpieces of national drama, as well as modern productions. In recent years, in addition to drama and comedy, innovative performances in the genres of absurdity and requiem have been staged, and close creative ties have been established with foreign directors. Today, the theater building houses a museum and a public library. There is also a photo booth for visitors. Literary evenings and creative events have already become traditional in the small hall.
