The city of Taraz is one of the most densely populated and most beautiful cities in Kazakhstan, the center of Zhambyl region. In the 18th century, this city was called Auli-Ata, in 1936-1937 the city was called Mirzoyan, in 1937-1997 the city of Zhambyl (Dzhambul), on January 8, 1997 the historical name of the city of Taraz was returned to the city. In the Middle Ages, the city was known as Taraz. The first people who came to the city were Sogdians from the Ferghana Valley. In 2002, Taraz celebrated its 2000th anniversary. In the Middle Ages, Taraz was one of the cities located on the Great Silk Road. It flourished especially during the Karakhan dynasty. In the 60s of the 19th century, the city was part of the Russian Empire. During the Soviet Union, it was the center of the Zhambyl region, and after the independence of Kazakhstan it continued to be the administrative center of the region. The mausoleums of Aisha Bibi, Babaji Khatun, Karakhana, Tekturmas, Nametbai Mosque and the medieval Kali Yunus bathhouse are located in Taraz. Information, history -

Taras has been inhabited for more than 2000 years. In the 5th century, the city of Taraz was located here on the caravan route between Europe and China. In 751, the Battle of Talas took place near the city between the victorious Abbasid Caliphate and the Chinese Empire. Taras was under the rule of the Arabs in the 8th-9th centuries and was ravaged by the Mongols in the 13th century. At the end of the XVIII century, the Kazakh city of Aulie-Ata was founded here. In 1864, Aulie Ata was conquered by Russian troops under the leadership of Colonel Mikhail Chernyaev, and in 1867 it became part of the newly created Turkestan Governor-General. After the October Revolution of 1917, on April 18, 1918, the city was incorporated into the Turkestan ASSR as part of the Russian Empire. When the Turkestan ASSR was divided in 1924, on October 27, 1924, Aulie-Ata became part of the newly created Kazakh SSR within the Soviet Union. In addition to Kazakhs, representatives of many nationalities live in Taras: Koreans, Tatars, Russians, Ukrainians, Germans, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Poles, Chinese, Uighurs, Greeks, Dungans, Turks, Kurds and Caucasians. The city is located in an irrigated area with orchards and vegetable growing. The city produces food, chemicals, fertilizers, textiles, shoes and metal products. Taraz Airport is located 4 km south of the city. Taraz is located on the Turkestan-Siberian Railway (Turksib). The A2 highway (Kazakhstan), 1,197 km long, runs through Taras, leading from Uzbekistan to the People's Republic of China. The A14 motorway (Kazakhstan), leading to Kyrgyzstan, begins in the city.
