Detailed description -
Tulip Behma is a rare species of wild tulips, which is distinguished by its graceful shape and bright colors, red and yellow. The bulb is small, about 1-1.5 cm in diameter, covered with brown leathery scales. The stem is from 15 to 40 cm high, most often smooth, with two linear narrow leaves that do not reach the flower. Flowers can be single or collected in small groups of 6-8 pieces, after flowering they droop. The petals are white with a bright yellow base, and on the outside - with a muted purple hue. The stamens are painted yellow, have a characteristic hairy ring at the base. The fruit is an oblong or almost spherical capsule up to 2 cm in size, containing up to 117 full-fledged seeds. Reproduces mainly by seed. It blooms in late March - April, and the fruits ripen in late May - June. The tulip is found in sandy and clayey deserts, on rocky slopes and in foothill areas. Its range covers the southern regions of Kazakhstan - from the Aral Sea region to the Balkhash-Alakol basin. The largest population is observed in the Kyzylorda, Zhambyl, Almaty and Turkestan regions.
Tulip Behma is listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and needs protection. The main threats are grazing, digging up of bulbs and changes in natural conditions. To preserve it, work is underway to create new reserves and sanctuaries, as well as environmental programs.
