It belongs to the lily family (Liliaceae) and has unique botanical characteristics that make it a valuable object of study and protection. The tulip blooms in April – May, creating vivid picturesque landscapes in steppe and desert areas.

Lehmann’s tulip grows exclusively on the territory of Kazakhstan in the short spring period. The tulip is endemic, it can be found in the Kuzylkum desert, Muyunkum desert, Betpakdala desert, Turkestan region, Zhambyl region.

The bulb of the Lehmann tulip is egg-shaped, reaches 3 cm in thickness, and is covered with dense black-brown scales extending to the surface of the soil. The stem can grow up to 50 cm in height and bears four narrow bluish wavy leaves. The flower is elongated-cup-shaped, up to 7 cm high, its color varies from yellow and red to variegated, with a characteristic dark spot inside. The staminate filaments are yellow or black-purple, and the anthers are bright yellow. The fruit is an oval box up to 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Flowering begins in April – May, and the seeds ripen by the end of May – June. It reproduces by seed and vegetative methods, especially actively at a young age. It grows on sandy and stony soils, is found in the Kyzylkum deserts, less often in the Northern Muyunkums and the southwestern part of Betpakdala (Turkestan and Zhambyl regions). Hybrid forms can be found in the places where the ranges intersect with the Boehm tulip. Tests on the cultivation of Lehman's tulip were carried out in the botanical gardens of Tashkent, Dushanbe, Kiev and St. Petersburg, but the plant turned out to be unstable in culture. It has been grown in Almaty since 1965, but it fell out after 4-5 years. Despite this, the species has a high decorative potential and requires the development of special cultivation methods. This rare flower is listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, but there are no protected areas within its range yet. Scientists and environmentalists emphasize the importance of creating the Kyzylkum Nature Reserve to preserve this unique species.
