Ketmen Pass, a little-known landmark of the Almaty region, is located in a picturesque mountain valley at an altitude of 3050 meters above sea level. There is a mountain road leading to the pass, along which it is necessary to travel exclusively by 4x4 vehicles (highly passable jeeps).

The Ketmen Pass is part of the famous mountain range, which is also called Ketmen and belongs to the mountain system, the Tien Shan Mountains.

How to get there and visit -

Ketmen Pass is located in the Chungjinsky district of the Almaty region in the area of Lake Tuzkol. The main landmark here is the village of Ketpen, which is located at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level in the foothills. There is a mountain road leading from the village to the pass. The gorge through which the road passes is called Ketmensai.

Tourist Information

It will take you at least two days to travel to the Ketmen Pass. Be sure to have your identity documents with you, as the border with China is located nearby and it is possible to check your documents with the border guard service. The road from the village of Ketpen to the Ketmen Pass was built in Soviet times, traveling along this road is possible only in the summer, when the snow melts and the road is dry.

The pass offers a beautiful panorama of the mountains of the Central Tien Shan, the Ili River valley, the Sarydjaz range and the Meridional range. Then the road descends into the valley of the Shalkudysu River. Plan your trip to this region in advance and it will take you three days to get here, possibly more.
