How to get to West Altai nature reserve.

The main mountain ranges: Liney, Koksinsky, Ivanovsky and Ulbinsky, do not reach great heights and have an erosional relief. Tectonic forms determine the largest features of modern orography. The complex geological history of its origins goes into the distant past. Even in the Precambrian and the Lower Paleozoic, as a result of tectonic movements, the foundation of a folded mountainous country was laid, which was finally formed during the Hercynian folding. Glacial forms of relief do not have universal significance for the entire territory of Altai, but in a number of areas they determine the specificity of the surface structure. Water-erosional forms of relief are widespread, and are most developed in the region of middle mountains. Unique formations - granite remnants of the Linea squirrel - one of the original geological monuments of past eras. The structure of the reserve is attended by the igneous rocks of the Permian and Devonian periods, as well as the youngest Quaternary formations.

In the mountains, the hydrological network is well developed, represented by the White and Black Uba rivers with tributaries Sidyashikha, Lineychiha, Komenushka, Paleva. In the sources of these rivers there is a complex of small high-mountainous lakes of tarn origin. The largest lakes - Kedrovoye (lake) and Shcherbakov - are located on the border of the forest and alpine zones. Dozens of small streams form upland bogs, in particular, the largest Gulbishche bog in the headwaters of the Black Uba, in Western Altai. The main power of the rivers is snow, so the flood takes place in May-June, and the period of low water lasts from November to March.
