Lake Markakol – the heart of the reserve
At an altitude of 1447 meters above sea level, between the majestic Kurchum and Azutau ridges, Lake Markakol is located. This huge and picturesque lake stretches for 38 kilometers in length and 19 kilometers in width, and its maximum depth reaches 30 meters. The shores of the lake alternate between dense forests, high cliffs and green meadows, creating stunning landscapes that seem to have come from a painting. The water in the lake is crystal clear – the transparency depth reaches five meters. It changes its color depending on the time of day: in the morning it can be blue, at noon – emerald, and in the evening – deep blue and even black. Unique species of fish live here, such as grayling and lenok (uskach), which attract fishermen from all over the world.
How to get to the reserve -
The Markakol Reserve is located in the Kurchum district of the East Kazakhstan region. The only time to get here is in the summer, when the mountain passes are free of snow. The most popular route is along the famous Austrian Road, which is a separate attraction in itself. This narrow mountain road is 57 kilometers long and runs through the Alatai and Burkhat passes, opening up stunning views of the mountain ranges and valleys. Another route leads through the village of Tekekty and the Marble Pass. Both routes require the use of off-road vehicles and are suitable for those looking for adventure.
