Austrian Road (Old Austrian Road)

Organization of a jeep tour along the Old Austrian Road -

Travel from Ust-Kamenogorsk to Lake Markakol -

The Austrian Road - or the Old Austrian Road, also known as the Military Road, runs through the mountainous and picturesque terrain of the Kazakh Altai. There is no tourist infrastructure here, the places are absolutely wild and inaccessible. The road is open and accessible in the summer, in winter the road is completely impassable. We recommend traveling along the Austrian road only by cars, 4x4 jeeps with high cross-country ability. You must also have all the necessary equipment for setting up a camp, spending the night in the mountains and a field kitchen.

Along the Austrian Road you will encounter more than one bridge over rivers, in some places there are no bridges, so the rivers must be forded. We recommend driving along the Austrian Road in a group of at least two 4x4 jeeps for mutual assistance and help. The road runs along the Kara-Koba River. The road was built by Austrian prisoners of war after the First World War. Traveling along the Austrian Road is only possible in the summer, July, August, when it is dry and there is no rain, in winter the road is closed and completely inaccessible. There are drivers in super-prepared super-high cross-country vehicles that can travel here in winter.

How to get there, visit -
