The Republican Museum of Musical Instruments named after Ykylas Dukenov is a museum of Kazakh folk musical instruments and musical instruments of different nations of the world, located in a beautiful wooden building on the territory of the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen next to the memorial, the eternal flame and the officers' house. The decision to create a museum was made by the government of the Kazakh SSR on August 1, 1980. The museum opened on April 24, 1981 as the Republican Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. On March 11, 1990, it was decided to name the museum in honor of the Kazakh folk composer Ykylas Dukenuly. The museum was reconstructed in 2012 and 2013. Not only the appearance of the exhibitions changed, but the concept of the museum was also revised. On May 15, 2013, the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments reopened. Also nearby in the park is the famous Ascension Cathedral, which was built without a single nail and withstood the devastating earthquake of 1910.

The Museum of Musical Instruments in Almaty has 9 exhibition halls, 1244 exhibits from about 40 countries of the world are presented. The museum's expositions tell about the formation and development of the museum, telling about the musical folklore of the Kazakh people, about the history of musical instruments, about the current state of instrumental musical art. The museum contains rare musical instruments such as dombra, narkobyz, kylkobyz, zhezkobyz, sazgen, syrnay, shankobyz, zhetygen and others. The museum has a permanent exhibition hall, which, along with national instruments, presents more than three hundred musical instruments of Turkic origin and foreign peoples. The collection, storage, research and propaganda of these collections are carried out by scientific-fund, scientific-laboratory and scientific-propaganda departments. The ensemble of ancient instruments “Sazgen”, created by the museum staff, plays a major role in this.
