In this area there are such villages as the village of Ulgili, in honor of which the canyon was named, the village of Karsak and the village of Ermakovka. The Legend of the Ulguli Waterfall and Canyon - Where Names Fight Eternity
Friends, if you listen to the roar of these waters, you can make out the echoes of an old dispute that has not yet been resolved. In those days, when the trees remembered the voices of the first shamans, and the rivers carried not only water, but also stories, young people from all the surrounding villages gathered at the foot of these rocks. They did not come just like that - every year a real battle was played out here for the right to give the waterfall the name of their family. Picture this picture: a clear May morning, the air trembling with anticipation, and horsemen from seven nearby villages lining up at the water's edge. The competition lasted three days and three nights - who would throw a spear farther through the seething foam, whose voice would drown out the thunder of the waterfall, whose kumys would be stronger than these rapid streams. But the main test was the descent to the very foot, where the rocks, watered for centuries by falling water, became slippery, like the skin of a newborn foal.
They say that in the year when the Ulgilinians won, nature itself confirmed their right. The water suddenly changed its course, revealing a stone with the face of an ancient warrior - exactly the same as the one depicted on the tamga of their family. And in the evening, when the elders had already carved a new name on the sacred tree at the foot, the waterfall suddenly fell silent for a moment, as if taking a breath before pronouncing its new name - Ulgulinsky. But the strangest thing is that the competition never seemed to end. To this day, during the full moon, local shepherds hear the clanging of blades and cries at the waterfall, as if the spirits of the former participants were continuing the dispute. And if you come here at dawn and throw a handful of earth from your village into the water, you can see how the streams change their course for a moment - as if the waterfall is remembering that old competition and checking whether the current residents are worthy of giving it a new name. The elder of the village, Karasu, once told me: "This waterfall is like an unfinished song. Each generation adds its voice to it, but the last note has not yet sounded." Maybe that is why, when you stand under the icy spray and watch the water roaring down, it seems that somewhere in this roar you can hear your own name - the only question is whether the waterfall will hear it in a hundred years.
