Autumn tour for wild Sievers apple trees in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is the birthplace of all the Apples in the World -

Botanical tourism and botanical tours in the Almaty region -

Zhongar-Alatau Nature Park is one of the key places in Kazakhstan where work is underway to preserve and study the unique natural heritage, including wild Sivers apple trees, the progenitors of all modern cultivated apple varieties. These ancient trees growing in the mountains of the Dzungarian Alatau represent not only botanical, but also cultural, genetic and global food value.

The Sievers apple tree (Malus sieversii) is endemic to Central Asia and it is in its genetics that a huge variety of shapes, tastes and resistance to diseases is inherent. In the mountains of the Zhongar-Alatau Park, on the slopes, in the valleys and near the rivers, there are preserved areas of ancient forests where these apple trees grow in their natural environment – among birches, mountain ash, junipers and other rocks. These plantings form a special ecosystem and serve as a refuge for many species of birds, insects and mammals.

Park staff, botanists and biologists from Kazakhstan and other countries conduct constant monitoring, conduct expeditions and field research, collect seeds, and study the adaptive characteristics of trees. Work is also underway to protect these areas from logging, fires and pasture pressure.

The Park is actively developing the direction of ecological tourism, especially interesting are the botanical tours organized during the flowering of apple trees – in May or in autumn in October, when the apple trees bear fruit. This time is especially beautiful: The mountain slopes are covered with pink and white clouds from the flowering crowns, filling the air with a delicate fragrance. Such tours provide an opportunity not only to admire the rare beauty, but also to learn more about the importance of the Sievers apple tree in the history of mankind.
