The Northern Tien Shan is a beautiful mountain range, divided into two small mountain systems: Kungey Ala-Too and Trans-Ili Alatau. Kungey-Alatau translated from Kazakh means Motley Mountains facing the sun. In the middle of this mountain system there is a beautiful high-mountain lake Issyk-Kul; the lake separates the mountain systems and is the water boundary between them. Lake Issyk-Kul is located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan; there is a mountain route to this lake from the city of Almaty on the Kazakhstan side. The mountains of the Northern Tien Shan and Trans-Ili Alatau are 280 kilometers long and 80 kilometers wide. Also, the Tien Shan Mountains consist of such mountain ranges as Ile Alatau, Kungei Alatau, Terskey Alatau and Uzynkara (Ketmen).

The Northern Tien Shan Mountains are located on the territory of two states at once: Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. In Kazakhstan, the Tien Shan Mountains are located near the city of Almaty. The city of Almaty is the starting point for visiting the Tien Shan mountains, from the city you can get to two mountain gorges at once, this is the Big Almaty Gorge, here is the Big Almaty Lake and the Small Almaty Gorge, where the famous high-mountain base Shymbulak (Chimbulak) is located.
