The Zhanatas city is a small industrial city in the south of Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the Sarysu district of the Zhambyl region is located at an altitude of 506 meters above sea level. The development of Zhanatas is closely related to the mining of phosphorites in the Karatau phosphorite basin. In 1964, a small working village was founded at the mining site, which over time turned into a village and in 1969 the village received the status of a city and was renamed Zhanatas, which means “New Stone” in Kazakh. Within a few years, new residential buildings were built here, and mining became more and more extensive. In 1989, the city already had a population of 53,000.

The city of Zhanatas was founded in 1964 as a small village, then 4 years later it received the status of a city. The collapse of the Soviet Union and economic changes in Kazakhstan meant that mining in Zhanatas faced great difficulties. The town's main mining operation closed in the early 1990s. This led to a large part of the population migrating to other cities in search of work. As a result, entire apartment buildings were abandoned and fell into disrepair over time; some of them were demolished over time. In recent years, several hundred abandoned buildings have been demolished in the city. At the southern entrance to the city, the ninth microdistrict - an entire district of the city - was demolished. Now the city has several schools, a museum, a cultural center, 2 libraries, a sports school, a club, a hospital, and a regional sanitary and epidemiological station. Residents communicate with other settlements by road and rail (Taraz-Zhanatas railway line). The terrain around the city of Zhanatasa is flat in the northeast and hilly in the southwest. There are no other settlements nearby. The area around Zhanatas consists mainly of meadows.
