Khromtau is an industrial city, was founded in 1940 as a small village, received city status in 1967, the village appeared here after the discovery of a deposit of ore containing chromium. The city is located near the border of the Russian Federation, the population of the city is 29,980 people. In the vicinity of the city there are deposits of chrome ore. The most important enterprise is the Shevchenko chromium-nickel plant "Voskhod". The Kazchrome company also mines chrome ore here at the Donskoy Mining and Processing Plant. The city is home to the football club FC Gornyak Khromtau, which took part in the top league of Kazakhstan from 1992 to 1995. The M32 motorway passes through the city. In the city, 75% of the population are ethnic Kazakhs, the rest are mainly ethnic Russians, Ukrainians and German-Kazakhs. Most Germans immigrated to Germany in the 1990s. In the city of Khromtau there is an Orthodox church and a small Catholic parish; a mosque was also built in the city.
