Sports facilities tour of the Southern Capital -
Halyk Arena, also known as the Halyk Arena Ice Palace, is not just a sports facility, but a real center of sports, culture and urban life in Almaty. It was built in 2016 specifically for the 2017 Winter Universiade, becoming one of the key arenas of the international student forum.
The complex is designed as a multifunctional facility capable of hosting the highest level of competitions, from hockey and figure skating to other winter and even summer disciplines. Architecturally, the Halyk Arena consists of three interconnected blocks: the main one, where the main arena is located; the auxiliary one, which includes training and warm-up areas; and the administrative one, which houses offices, a press center and technical services.
The heart of the complex is a hockey arena with 3,207 seats. But its capabilities go far beyond ice sports: thanks to the innovative transformation system of the ice field, the arena can be quickly converted into a playground for volleyball, basketball, futsal, wrestling, boxing and other game or individual disciplines. At the same time, the safety of the ice is ensured by a special thermal protective coating that fits on top of the hockey court and reliably insulates the cold.
Thanks to the state–of-the-art technical equipment, the Halyk Arena is also a full-fledged concert venue. Music shows, festivals, ceremonies and other cultural events are regularly held here. The complex is equipped with advanced lighting, sound and video technical equipment that meets the requirements of major international producers and event organizers.
Thus, the Halyk Arena is not just an ice palace, but a universal space where sports, art and social life intersect, open to both professional athletes and all residents and guests of Almaty.
History
The idea of creating an ice palace appeared when Almaty received the right to host the Winter Universiade. It was important for the city to demonstrate a high level of organization and modern infrastructure. The construction of the arena began in 2014, and the facility was officially opened in 2016. The first big event on the ice was the master class of the famous Kazakhstani figure skater Denis Ten, who left a noticeable mark in the history of the country's sports.
The name "Halyk Arena" appeared thanks to the support of the national bank, which became the main sponsor. This step marked a new stage in the interaction between business and sports in Kazakhstan. During the pandemic, the arena also served a social role – its premises were used as a temporary hospital, which emphasized its importance not only for sports, but also for the city as a whole.

Architecture and design
The Halyk Arena was built on an area of more than 11 hectares, which made it possible to create a spacious and multifunctional complex. The architectural concept of the arena reflects the dynamics of modern sports: the smooth lines of the facades resemble the streamlined shape of an ice drop or ice crystal. Glass and metal are used in the decoration of the building, making the facade look light and transparent, and in the evening, when illuminated, it turns into a shining object of the urban environment. The number 8 (eight) looks like the top of the arena.
The arena building is designed to provide convenience for both spectators and athletes. The interior spaces are spacious and functional: wide halls with panoramic windows are filled with natural light, creating a sense of openness. The stands are designed for about 3,200 spectators, while the view from any place is convenient and nothing interferes with the perception of what is happening on the ice.
Legend and spirit of the place: "The Happy Chair" and the voice of the tribunes
Despite its youth, the arena has already found its traditions. There is a legend among fans about the "happy chair" – one particular place on the podium, from which the owner of the place never loses. Of course, his number is kept a top secret, which only fuels excitement and faith in a happy place.
But the main "legend" is born here every match. This is an incredible acoustics and energy created by 23,000 spectators. It is said that the roar of the stands chanting slogans is so powerful that its echo reaches the mountain gorges. This is a place where real magic lasts during the competition, where hopes and emotions merge into a single impulse.
Halyk Arena is not only a sports facility, but also an architectural symbol of modern Almaty. Its dynamic appearance, high technology and versatility make the arena a must-visit for those who want to see how world-class sports complexes are being created in Kazakhstan.
