Athletic Village is a modern sports and residential complex in the western part of Almaty. It was built specifically for the 2017 Winter Universiade and has become one of the main symbols of this large-scale event. The complex is located near Ryskulova and Momyshuly streets, surrounded by picturesque mountains and developed urban infrastructure. The complex is designed according to the “city within a city” principle, everything is thought out to the smallest detail: residential buildings, sports grounds, recreation areas, alleys, green spaces, cafes, medical and administrative centers.
Today, the Athletic Village is not only a reminder of the sports history of Kazakhstan, but also a cozy neighborhood where Almaty residents, students and professional athletes live. Everything here is within walking distance of each other, the place is great for an active lifestyle and sports. The Almaty Arena sports complex is located near the village, where everyone will find their own sports section that suits them.
History
The idea of building an Athletic Village arose in 2013, when Almaty received the right to host the Winter Universiade. The project was conceived as a multifunctional complex capable of hosting several thousand athletes from all over the world. The work was carried out at an accelerated pace, taking into account all international standards of comfort and safety.
In 2017, the village opened its doors to Universiade participants – athletes from more than 50 countries. Here they lived, trained and prepared for competitions, feeling the hospitality of Kazakhstan and the atmosphere of unity. After the games, the complex was converted into residential areas. This made it possible to preserve its infrastructure and breathe new life into it – now the village has become a part of the urban architecture of Almaty.
Architecture
The architectural solution of the Athletic Village combines modern minimalism and functionality. The complex consists of neat multi–stores buildings built in the same style - strict lines, bright facades, large windows that fill the apartments with sunlight and offer views of the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau.
The courtyards are equipped with playgrounds and sports grounds, recreation areas and landscaped squares. All this creates an atmosphere of comfort and coziness. The project also includes sports facilities such as gyms, running tracks, football and basketball courts, and the Almaty Arena Ice Palace, which regularly hosts competitions, concerts and cultural events, is located in the immediate vicinity.

After the Universiade, its premises were used to house students, athletes, and employees of sports organizations, which helped strengthen the sports culture in the city. Today, trainings, training camps and events are held here, inspiring a new generation of Kazakhstanis.
Although the Athletic Village is a modern facility without ancient legends, it already has a special symbolism associated with it.
