Government buildings of the Southern Capital -
Architectural structures from the time of the Soviet Union in Almaty -
The Akimat of Almaty (City Hall) is the main administrative building of the city and a symbol of power, responsibility and management of the largest metropolis in Kazakhstan. Decisions are made here that determine the development of Almaty, its infrastructure, culture, economy and social life. The Akimat building is located in the heart of the city, on Dostyk Avenue, not far from Republic Square, one of the most recognizable and historically significant places in the capital of the south. The Monument of Independence of Kazakhstan is located here on the square.
Beautiful fountains, pedestrian alleys and small squares are located from the northern and eastern parts of the Akimat of Almaty. The akimat is also surrounded by small parks and squares, where various kinds of trees and ornamental shrubs are planted. Just below the akimat, right in front of the square, there is an underground shopping center with cafes and restaurants. Above the akimat, behind Temiryazev Street, there is a sculpture park and the park of the First President Foundation. The State Museum of Kazakhstan is located here in close proximity to the Akimat behind Nazarbayev Avenue.
History
Initially, the old House of Soviets was located on the site of the modern Akimat building, which in the 1970s no longer corresponded to the growing scale of the city. Then it was decided to erect a new administrative building, which would become not only the center of power, but also an architectural symbol of Alma Ata, a city at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains.
Construction began in the early 1980s and lasted almost ten years. The project was developed by the leading architects of Kazgiprogorstroy, inspired by the idea of combining strict state architecture with elements of the Kazakh tradition. The interior design used national motifs – ornaments, wooden panels, ceramic inserts, which gave the building character and warmth.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan's independence in December 1991, the building became the official residence of the Mayor of Almaty. It was from here that, in the early years of independence, all the key changes were managed – the city, where a new economy, new infrastructure and new symbols of the young country were being formed. In 1997, after the transfer of the capital to Astana (then Akmola), the Akimat building was finally established as the main administrative center of the southern capital. The most important city programs were formed here, from the construction of the subway to the restoration of historical districts and the improvement of parks.
A special place in the history of the building is occupied by January 2022, when it was set on fire during the tragic events. This moment became one of the most difficult pages in the modern history of Almaty. However, a year later, restoration work began, during which the building was not just restored, but renovated, filling it with modern security and energy-saving systems.
In 2023, the Akimat reopened its doors as a symbol of the resilience of the city, which, despite the trials, was able to rise up and continue the way forward.
Architecture
The architecture of the building is made in the style of monumental classicism of the late Soviet period. It is built of white marble and granite, characterized by strict geometric lines, massive columns and a spacious grand staircase.
The facade of the building is decorated with bas-reliefs and decorative elements, emphasizing the formality and importance of the institution. In front of the building there is a wide square with flagpoles, flower beds and evergreen fir trees, and behind there are landscaped squares and alleys.
From the south side there is a beautiful view of the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau, creating the feeling that the building itself stands on the border between human power and the force of nature.
