Cultural and Historical Attractions of Almaty -
The Museum of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a unique place where the country's history is told not in words, but through coins, banknotes, and artifacts that preserve the memory of the economic development of independent Kazakhstan. This museum is one of the most interesting in Almaty, combining historical value, aesthetic beauty, and educational value.
It was established under the auspices of the National Bank of Kazakhstan in 1993, shortly after the introduction of the national currency, the tenge. Initially conceived as an internal collection of rare exhibits, with growing public interest, it was transformed into a full-fledged museum open to the public. Today, it is more than just an exhibition space, but a unique center of financial culture, where visitors can explore the development of Kazakhstan's monetary system—from ancient mints to modern banknotes.
History and Exhibits
The museum's exhibits include thousands of items and span various eras: from the ancient Turkic world to the modern financial era. Particular attention is paid to the period when Kazakhstan gained independence and introduced its own currency, the tenge, which first entered circulation on November 15, 1993.
Here you can see rare coins of the Golden Horde, silver dirhams, and tyiyn from the Kazakh Khanate, as well as banknotes from the Russian Empire and the USSR, when Kazakhstan was part of other states. A separate hall is dedicated to the creation of the first Kazakhstani tenge, featuring original designs, proofs, and rare collector coins issued in limited editions.
A special place is occupied by commemorative coins made of gold, silver, and nickel, dedicated to important events in the country's history: the 550th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate, EXPO 2017, the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence, and other anniversaries.
Architecture and Atmosphere
The museum is located in the National Bank building in the heart of Almaty, on Kunayev Street. The building itself is an example of monumental Soviet modernist architecture with elements of austere classical style. Inside, an atmosphere of tranquility, attention to detail, and precision permeates the atmosphere—everything reflects the spirit of the financial institution and its respect for history.
The museum halls are softly lit, and the display cases are designed to make each coin and banknote look like a work of art. Here, you can not only admire the exhibits but also learn how money is created, what security technologies are used, and how the design of the national currency has evolved over the years.

Interesting Facts and Legend
Among the museum's exhibits is a special banknote – the first copy of the one tenge banknote, hand-signed by a group of artists and designers who participated in its creation. Legend has it that this banknote brings good luck to those who work with finance or dream of starting their own business.
There's also another legend: if you make a wish at the exhibit featuring the first coin minted in Kazakhstan after independence, your wish will definitely come true – especially if it's connected to honest work and a good deed.
A Touch of History
A visit to the National Bank Museum is an opportunity to see how the history of the state, its journey from ancient trade routes to the modern economy, is revealed through money. This is a place where value is measured not only in gold and silver, but also in memory, culture, and respect for the past.
For tourists, the museum is an unexpected discovery – a quiet yet profound place of power, where Kazakhstan's past and present come together in a single space. Here, you feel that money is not just a medium of exchange, but a reflection of the people's spirit, their labor, and their aspiration for independence.
