Legends Ili river.

The wizard Balkhash had a beautiful daughter - Ili. Her suitors - rich, bais and khans began to woo, but the girl did not want to marry any of them. All of them seemed to her unworthy of her beauty. Then Balkhash decided to arrange competitions for the suitors. “Whoever turns out to be the smartest, most dexterous and strong will receive Or as a wife,” the wizard announced. The glory of Eli went all over the steppe. A long time ago I heard about her and the young Karatal. Zhigit was very poor. But he had a couple of beautiful horses, was distinguished by dexterity, courage and strength. The karatal also went to the wizard's palace to try his luck. Balkhash did not want to talk with the poor zhigit. But or fell in love with him at first sight. She begged her father to allow Karatal to take part in the competitions of the suitors.
Karatal won the fight at the races of young princes and khans. However, Balkhash did not keep his word. He refused to have a poor son-in-law’s son-in-law. The beautiful woman cried all day, and at night Karatal secretly came to her and suggested: “If you love me, we run.” Or gladly agreed. That same night they sped off on the horses of Karatal. Balkhash learned about their flight. In an angry voice that sounded stronger than thunder across the steppe, he ordered the fugitives to stop. But Eli and Karatal did not want to return. She raced to the native village of Karatal. Then the wizard was transferred to the steppe and at the feet of the fugitives horses turned into a huge lake. Since then it began to be called his name - Balkhash. Or the wizard turned Karatal into turbulent rivers that flow into the lake in various places. For many centuries they have been seething and worried, in vain trying to merge together.
