One-day hike to Abay Peak, difficulty category 1B – 2A -
Mountaineering in the upper reaches of the Small Almaty Gorge -
Abay is a mountain peak, the height of the peak is 4010 meters, it is a beautiful three-headed peak, it is clearly visible from the city of Almaty. The relief around the peak is mountainous. The peak consists of three parts, on the western side of the peak there is a steep cliff towards the Malaya Almatinka River (Small Almaty). On the northern slope there is a small Abay glacier. For the first time in July 1932, Almaty climbers led by G.I. Beloglazov climbed Abay Peak. The peak was named after the great Kazakh poet and educator Abay Kunanbayev. The highest point nearby is Komsomol Peak 4248 meters above sea level.
To climb Abay Peak, you need the ability to work with special equipment on rocky terrain. The summit is not considered difficult, requires basic mountaineering skills. The ascent to the summit from the high-mountain station Tuyuksu takes 5-7 hours depending on your athletic training, the descent is 4 hours, the group size is no more than 10 people, and the skill of working in a team on a mountain route is also required.
