Stone rock Uy-Tas on the Bukhtarma river

Tours and excursions in Kazakhstan's Southern Altai -

Jeep tour from the village of Archaty to the mountain tract Chindagatuy -

Stone Uy-Tas - translated from Kazakh means "Stone House", is one of the most interesting sights of the Southern Altai in the Katon-Karagay National Park and is a huge stone 10 meters high and 7 meters wide. The stone is located at an altitude of 1390 meters above sea level on the road from the village of Arshaty, 87 meters from the bank of the Bukhtarma river. Stone It stands in the valley of the Bukhtarma river, between the ridges of the Southern Altai and at the junction of the Listvyaga ridge with the western spurs of the Ukok plateau. It is impossible to climb the stone, you can only go around it in a circle. It is worth noting that on the left bank of the Bukhtarma you can see many stones of a slightly smaller size. There is a small gazebo near the stone, benches are installed, here you can relax. You can also set up a base camp in this place and spend the night on the river bank.

The Uy-Tas stone has been known since ancient times, although its true history has not been precisely established. It probably appeared here as a result of an earthquake, when stone blocks of different sizes rolled down from the northern slope of the Southern Altai ridge. According to another legend, the stone appeared here in some magical way, was moved through the air and left by ancient shamans who lived in these places. There is no obvious place on the surrounding mountains from where such a large stone could have broken off. The stone resembles a huge house in its size, for which it received the name Uy-Tas (Stone House). The soldiers of the local border outpost have a tradition of leaving their names on this stone, applying them with multi-colored paint after completing their service. The stone is a monolithic block of gray granite weighing over 500 tons.
