The Bukhtarma River is a picturesque mountain river that flows through the East Kazakhstan region and is one of the most beautiful and main natural attractions of the Katon-Karagay Park. The river flows into the Irtysh River and is its main water tributary. The river flows through the lands of the Katon-Karagay and Altai regions, its length is 336 km, the catchment area is 12,660 km2. The Bukhtarma River originates in the east of Kazakhstan from Lake Bukhtarma, on the northern slope of the Southern Altai Mountains, on the border triangle between Kazakhstan, Russia and the People's Republic of China. The river is fed by melting snow, rainfall and groundwater, in the upper reaches it forms a turbulent river, meandering along a narrow valley. The main tributaries are the following rivers: the Belaya Berel River, the Chernovaya River, the Belaya River, the Turgusun River. The Bukhtarma Reservoir is located on the Irtysh River, a few kilometers below the mouth of the Bukhtarma. For this reason, the lower part of the Bukhtarma has turned into a bay due to the water retained by the reservoir.
