Charyn State National Natural Park (reserve) - the park is named “Charyn Park” in honor of the picturesque Charyn River (Sharyn) which flows through the park. It is often compared to the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Charyn Canyon is slightly smaller than its American counterpart, but has the same bizarre shape. The park was created on February 23, 2004 and represents the core and buffer zone of the Charyn Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2018. The area of the reserve is 83,479 hectares.

The Charyn Canyon (also called the “Valley of Castles”) is a geological formation that is part of the Charyn Park and the processes of relief formation are observed here, and therefore the canyon is of particular attractiveness for tourism and recreation. In addition to the canyon, the park extends to the deserted Sogeta valley and the Ulken-Boguty mountains.

Charyn National Park is located 200 kilometers from the city of Almaty, on the territory of the Uyghur, Raimbek, Enbekshikazakh districts, Almaty region, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Information -

The climate of Charyn Park is continental desert. The average annual temperature is +5°C. The average temperature in January is -5°C, in July +27°C. The annual precipitation is 150 mm. The park experiences frost 60 days a year and drought 40 days a year. The fauna of Charyn Park includes 36 species of mammals, 200 species of birds (111 of them nest in the park), 18 species of reptiles, 10 species of fish, as well as amphibians. The park is also home to a wide variety of insects.

The eastern part of the Malye Boguty mountains is the territory of the reserve, where goitered gazelles, listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan, live, and is also the habitat of the Siberian mountain goat. On the territory of the park there is a natural monument “Ash Forest of Charyn”, organized to protect a relict of a rare species Fraxinus sogdiana (ru). This is a unique tree species dating back to the Paleogene and protected by UNESCO. Protected since 19643, this tree species is subject to special care and protection.

Tourism -

Charyn Park is very attractive for its diversity and landscapes, the park was designed to provide access to visitors, in particular by creating pedestrian, highway and water routes. In addition to welcoming visitors, the park's management also pursues the goal of conserving nature and restoring natural systems. In particular, the introduction of tugai deer, protected by the Red Book of Kazakhstan, as well as by the IUCN, was undertaken. In addition, a nursery project is being implemented to promote the reproduction of rare birds. Sharyn State National Natural Park is a natural complex. The Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan has the status of an environmental and scientific institution of republican significance. Since 1964, the national park has been protected as a natural monument of republican significance.
