Information -
The Abay Glacier is located at altitudes of about 3,800 - 4,000 meters above sea level and is part of a large glacial massif of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. This is a typical valley glacier, which is formed as a result of the accumulation and compaction of snow. Its length is about 3 kilometers, and its width reaches 1 kilometer. Like many other glaciers in the world, the Abay Glacier is affected by global warming. Over the past decades, its area has significantly decreased, which has caused concern among environmentalists. Scientists continue to monitor the state of the glacier to understand how climate change affects mountain ecosystems. Research on the ice cover allows us to study climate change and predict further shrinkage of glaciers in the region. This process directly affects the water resources of Almaty and the entire southern part of Kazakhstan, since glaciers are the main sources of fresh water.
The Abay Glacier is not only a natural monument, but also a symbol of the fragility of the ecosystem of the Zailiysky Alatau Mountains. Its study and visit leave an unforgettable impression, but require a respectful attitude to the environment. A careful attitude to nature and responsible travel will help preserve this unique attraction for future generations.
