A pilgrimage from the southern capital to the northern -
The Main Republican Mosque of Astana is a majestic structure, striking in its scale and sky-blue domes. Built in record time in the capital of Kazakhstan from 2019 to 2022 at the initiative of the first president of Kazakhstan, it immediately entered the top 10 largest mosques in the world.
Construction was financed exclusively by private investors, without the involvement of the state budget. Today, it is not just a religious site, but a true architectural masterpiece, a symbol of the spiritual unity and hospitality of the Kazakh people.
The complex is located on a 10-hectare plot of land and is surrounded by a picturesque park with fountains. The mosque blends harmoniously with the modern landscape of the left bank of the Ishim River, combining ancient Islamic traditions with cutting-edge engineering technologies.

Information
The mosque's size is impressive: its total capacity is 235,000 people. The main halls can accommodate 30,000 men and 5,000 women in prayer, while an additional 200,000 worshippers can be accommodated in the open spaces and courtyard.
The main dome, 83.2 meters high and 62 meters in diameter, is considered one of the largest in the world. Four majestic minarets, each 130 meters tall, are divided into five sections, each symbolizing one of the pillars of Islam: the Shahada, prayer, Ramadan fasting, zakat, and Hajj.
The mosque's interior is filled with records. The main hall is adorned with a 20-ton, 27-meter-diameter crystal chandelier composed of over 1.3 million fragments. The floor is covered with a 15,525-square-meter hand-woven carpet made in New Zealand from 100% wool. This carpet, considered the largest in the world, is adorned with intricate Kazakh designs. The walls of the mosque are decorated with Arabic script on a blue background and colorful carvings.
Detailed Description of the Property
The wall facing the qibla (the direction of the Kaaba) deserves special attention. The mosaic, 100 meters long and over 22 meters high, features the 99 names of Allah, illuminated by a golden light. 25 million pieces of colored glass were used to create this mosaic. The mosque's entrance doors are also unique: handcrafted from hardwood iroko imported from Africa. The main door is over 12 meters high and weighs 1.5 tons.
The building is designed as a multifunctional center. The first and second floors house classrooms, a conference hall, a wedding hall, a television studio, a museum of Islamic culture, and shops. The basement level includes a 440-seat banquet hall, an indoor parking garage for 405 cars, and ritual spaces. One of the minaret towers is open to tourists: a high-speed elevator takes you to the observation deck for a bird's-eye view of Astana.
Architecture
The mosque's style is a synthesis of classical Islamic architecture and the national character of Kazakhstan. The sky-blue color of the domes echoes the color of the national flag and symbolizes peace. The interior is filled with light thanks to huge windows and a sophisticated lighting system. The use of precious materials, such as white marble and precious wood, combined with the skill of the artisans, makes the building a benchmark for modern architecture.
Conclusion
The Main Republican Mosque has become the heart of the capital's spiritual life and an important cultural bridge between East and West. It impresses not only with its numbers and records, but also with the creative energy it exudes. A visit to this complex allows each guest to experience the scale of modern Kazakhstan, which carefully preserves its faith and traditions while opening up to the world.
