Lake Bukhtarma (Bukhtarminskoe or Shagin) is a beautiful mountain lake, located at an altitude of 2029 meters above sea level in a beautiful mountain valley in the Katon-Karagay Park, not to be confused with the Bukhtarma Reservoir. The Bukhtarma River originates from the lake, 6 small mountain rivers flow into the lake, the largest of which is the Shanbage-Bulak, which originate from moraine lakes located high in the mountains on the slopes of the Kutansky mountain range. The border with Russia runs near the lake and there is a border outpost here. When traveling here, you must have a special permit and identity documents with you.

The length of Lake Bukhtarminskoe (Bukhtarma) is 5 kilometers, the width is 950 meters, the lake is surrounded by a beautiful coniferous forest. There are signs along the road to the lake, there is a small infrastructure on the lake, wooden benches, places for making a fire. The state border with the Russian Federation runs 2 kilometers from the lake. A mountain road leads to the lake, which can only be traveled by cars, 4x4 jeeps, high cross-country ability. A mountain road runs from the village of Arshaty to the lake, along which you can get to the lake. The road works in the summer from June to September, in winter the road is closed, but you can get to the lake in winter. Near Lake Bukhtarma at a distance of 4 kilometers is Mount Karashangal 2875 meters high, which is quite high for this region, if desired, you can arrange a mountain hike to the mountain, but this will require additional time. From Mount Karashangal, a beautiful panorama of Lake Bukhtarminskoye and the adjacent territory of the Katon-Karagay Park opens up.
