The Charyn (Sharyn) is a picturesque river, a natural landmark and a recreation area in the Almaty region. The river flows through the famous Charyn Canyon, and the river also flows near the Valley of Castles of the Charyn Canyon. There is a walking route to the river, along which you can approach the river, there are rest areas and a small yurt camp. The Charyn River begins with the mountain glaciers of Terskey Alatau and Kungey Alatau and flows into the Ili River, the length of the river is 427 kilometers. The second name of the river is Shalkydysu, this is what it is called in its upper reaches, which in translation from the Kazakh language means "stormy, flowing water." The river is also known as the Kegen River, this is the middle part of the river, before the turn to the village of Kegen, then the river is called Charyn.

On the Charyn River there are several panoramic points along the way from which a view of the river opens. The river also flows through a large gorge in the eastern part of the Zhalanash Depression and in the Toraigyr Mountains. On the Charyn River we can organize rafting and kayaking, rafting on the river is not easy, so for rafting you need to have extensive experience in rafting on mountain and plain rivers. There are steep rapids on the river, created by water and passing through which requires experience, the river has the highest level of difficulty.

Travel to the Charyn River and the region must be in the presence of professional guides, we also recommend monitoring the weather forecast, since at the beginning of the summer period in the region there may be heavy precipitation and mudflows may occur in small gorges. Therefore, it is necessary to observe safety precautions, and you must also have the necessary equipment for traveling, these are good trekking boots, a hat, a supply of water 2 liters, sunglasses, a spare T-shirt, sweatpants. If you suddenly get lost, stay where you are, notify the rescue services by emergency call. We do not recommend swimming in the river, the river is stormy and very fast. In the winter months, the Charyn River is covered with ice, the water from the river is used for irrigation, the river is fed by melted snow water.
