Kazakhstan Altay mountain region in East Kazakhstan.

Travels and tour service in Altai region.

Kazakh Altai and altai mountain system is located in the East Kazakhstan region (EKO) near the city of Oskemen (Ust-Kamenogorsk). About 15 mountain ranges are located in the East Kazakhstan region. Compared to the Tien Shan, the Altai Mountains are not so high. They reach their maximum height 300 km east of Oskemen - 4506 m. Everyone knows Mount Belukha. By the way, its southern slope is located on the territory of Kazakhstan. Moreover, the Great Berel glacial plateau, along which the classic mountaineering route from Russia passes, is also ours.

How to get to Altai.

Altai beckons with its incredible nature, which, as it seems to many, can only be seen in Russian Siberia. Already at low altitudes of 700-800 meters, a very dense forest begins, consisting mainly of birch, aspen, cedar, fir and larch. This can be seen on the road to Ridder. To the north, the forests begin even lower. Trees grow up to 1900-2000 m. Accordingly, it is not difficult to guess how much colder the local climate is compared to the Tien Shan. All natural zones have been shifted down a whole kilometer. Mountain ash is found in the underbrush, and there are quite a lot of raspberries and blueberries among edible berries. Here you can find also cedar cones, blueberries, milk mushrooms.
Above the forest zone there is snow for most of the year. Particularly large snowfields lie all year round. In the local Altai language, ridges on which snow lingers for a long time are called "squirrels". The accent on the last syllable. The squirrel itself, so to speak, is a "non-glacial" - very hard, packed snow over the years. In this belt (up to 3000 m) there are a lot of stone placers (kurumniks), very little earth surface, where alpine vegetation grows.

Altai mountains tourist information.

There are glaciers in Altai, of course, but only in the Belukha region. The largest ones descend as far as 2000-2200 m. There is such a glacier on the territory of Kazakhstan at the foot of Belukha – Berelskiy gacier. All the highest Kazakh ranges of Altai are located between Belukha and Markakol Lake. The highest point belongs to the Katunsky ridge. Other ridges are a whole kilometer below Belukha.
Some part of the Altai territory is under the protection of specially protected natural areas: the South Altai Nature Reserve, the Markakol

Katon-Karagai National Park.

Climate. In the Altai mountains, summer as such does not happen. It is very rainy, so whichever month you choose, all at random. More precisely, even so, you will definitely get into the rains. The only question is whether they will go the whole trip or half. You shouldn't count on better weather. The least precipitation is in September (by 20%), but at this time you can already get caught in snowfalls and a serious cold snap. The season in the high mountains (near Belukha) lasts from July to early September. Below 2000 m (forest zone) the season is longer. You can walk both in June and September. During hikes in Altai, the vast majority of overnight stays will be within the altitude range from 1500 to 2000 m. The average temperature in summer months is + 3… + 8 at night, + 14… + 20 in the daytime. The number of days with rains is 12-14 in 1 month. As for September, the air gets colder by 5 degrees compared to summer, by the end of the month - the difference reaches 10. The number of days with rain is slightly less - 8-10.
