Medeu is a high-mountain dam in the Medeo tract, this is the height of engineering art, craftsmanship and a grandiose project built to protect the city of Almaty from mudflows from a mountain gorge. The height of the dam is 150 meters, the length along the ridge is 530 meters, the width at the base is 800 meters, the dam is located at an altitude of 1750 meters above sea level. According to the project, two directed super-powerful explosions were first produced that collapsed part of the gorge on both sides and created a man-made barrier, which was then completed and strengthened. The construction of the dam began in 1964, next to the dam is also the famous Medeo sports complex. In 1973, the dam held back a powerful mudflow that came down the Malaya Almatinka River along the Maloye Almatinskoye Gorge.

The Medeu Dam is located 15 kilometers from Almaty along Nazarbayev Avenue in Ile-Alatau Park, Medeu tract, Maloye Almatinskoye Gorge, Medeu District, Almaty Region, Republic of Kazakhstan. Opposite, there is a bus stop near the Kazakhstan Hotel, from which bus #12 goes to the Medeu tract.

A staircase has been built on the Medeu Dam, which leads from the foot of the dam to its very top, you can climb the staircase to the dam on foot. The climb may take you from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level. This staircase is very popular among athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to the staircase, the dam has rest areas and panoramic points with wonderful views. From the very top of the Medeu dam, there is a magnificent view of the Maloye Almatinskoye Gorge (Small) in both directions and the Malaya Almatinka River (small). In November 2010, the site was awarded the status of an architectural and engineering monument. A cable car runs through the Medeu dam from the Medeu tract to the Shymbulak highland base and further to the Big Talgar Pass. The Medeu dam project was developed by the Kazakh branch of the Hydro-Project Institute. The authors of the project are G. Shapovalov and Yu. Consultants - academicians M. A. Lavrentyev, M. A. Sadovsky, M. V. Melnikov and L. I. Sedov.
